DynaFrax is ...
Founded in June 2018 as a spin-off of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) with the support of the Innovation and Networking Fund of the Helmholtz Association.

Our goal is ...
To provide our customers with solutions to the challenges in dealing with the dynamic behavior of underground fracture systems in a heterogeneous, complex and discontinuous crust to ensure an environmental friendly (minimized hazard and risk) and efficient/optimized use of underground resources, space and energy.

Our tool is ...
a Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical & Dynamic (THM:Dyn) coupled geoprocess simulator developed on the basis of Particle Flow Code (PFC), commercial Discrete/Distinct Element Model software from Itasca Consulting Group. We have developed and retrofitted our simulator over several years to capture the dynamic processes of subsurface fracture systems in response to human engineering practices, such as fluid injection, heat storage, and nuclear waste disposal.

Our simulation technology continues to evolve by merging with other software programs such as OpenGeoSys and OpenPNM. This makes DynaFrax's simulation workflow unique, powerful, innovative, and more responsive to our customers' challenges.

Our fields of expertise are ...

  • Modelling of fluid injection induced seismicity in deep geothermal and shale gas reservoirs

  • Design and optimization of hydraulic stimulation for deep geothermal energy (EGS)

  • Design and optimization of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas energy (Unconventional reservoir)

  • Modelling of long-term efficiency and productivity of EGS and unconventional reservoirs

  • Modelling of nuclear waste repository long-term safety

  • THMC coupled modelling
